Beloved Delray Beach - South End Edition

South Florida is known for its beaches, blue water and pristine sand. Unbelievable amounts of wealth owning mansions on the Atlantic waterfront. Of the miles and miles of beaches, Delray is a true gem.

Chris and I moved to the Boca-Delray boarder in 2011. Since Chris is a volleyball player, our first mission was to find the sandy courts. Almost immediately we had a new circle of friends. Fellow adults who leave their professions, age, and worries in the parking lot to enjoy sport, companionship and the great outdoors.

Delray is somewhat unique in that the volleyball courts are directly on the beach. After a few games, we enjoy swimming out to the wreck where we are sure to find wildlife (a lobster if we are lucky). The allure of Delray is not only the beach and sports, but its vibrance and ease of movement and a collection of most interesting people.

Chris and I brought our first born, Cassia, to the beach at 3 weeks old. Most of our weekends revolve around spending a lot of time at the beach, neglecting our domestic duties, other kids’ birthday parties and things most families do. Over the years and especially during the pandemic, we have recruited more and more friends to meet at the beach. Friday nights are a personal fave — the kids play while the parents decompress from the week. All is well for those few hours as the sun sets over the west coast of Florida. We spend so much time at the beach, when it rains we realize there are other things to do. I see my kids and I thank my lucky stars that they have this beautiful connection with friends in the outdoors, exploring independently and being their wild little selves.

Creative beings

A life lived of choice is a life of conscious action. A life lived of chance is a life of unconscious creation. - Walsch

Delray is not a major city like Ft Lauderdale — no traffic or long waits, but parking is paid in most places including the beach. The dining options are great and shopping is fun and beachy. There are always events in the Old School Square.

Restaurants

Yama - Japanese with a few Korean dishes. Yama is my favorite place to go to lunch for the Bento Box, but the 2nd and 2nd roll is my all time fave.

Brûlée - Great American comfort food. Has a great Happy Hour

Bamboo Fire - THE BEST Jamaican food! Get the jerk pork!!

Shopping

Coco and Co. - On trend fashion — apparel, jewelry and gifts (also check out: Periwinkle and Morley)

Events

Delray Green Market - This was an every Saturday occurrence when the kids were smaller.

“The Wreck”

Also known as “The Boiler” — not exactly sure what it is, but we make our kids swim out to experience the wildlife and improve their swimming skills.
